The automotive industry is constantly evolving, and motor oil technology is no exception. API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 standards are coming out soon, which require automotive engine oils to deliver enhanced performance and protection for modern engines.
This is an advancement designed to meet the increasing demands of today’s vehicles.

Here's what you need to know:
What is API SQ/GF-7?
API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 are new motor oil standards designed to meet the increasing demands of today’s vehicles.
- The API SQ standard provides improved wear protection and better high-temperature resistance across existing and ultra-low viscosity grades.
- GF-7 is designed to provide superior performance and protection. GF-7 is divided into two categories:
- GF-7A: Covers common viscosity grades like 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, and 10W-30. These are the oils you’re probably most familiar with.
- GF-7B: Focuses on newer, ultra-low viscosity grades like 0W-16, 0W-8, and 0W-12. These thinner oils are crucial for maximizing fuel economy in engines designed for them.
Both API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 standards were developed in conjunction with emerging engine designs and align very closely with one another.
Why the Change?
Modern engines are marvels of engineering, but they also have specific needs. The evolution of API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 is driven by several key factors:
- Enhanced Fuel Economy: reduce friction and help improve fuel efficiency
- LSPI Protection: Mitigates Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI), a potentially damaging issue in modern turbocharged engines
- Improved Engine Cleanliness: Keeps engine components cleaner, leading to better performance and longevity
- Increased Durability: Offers improved protection against wear, extending the life of critical engine parts like timing chains
- Meeting Regulatory Standards: Aligns with the latest industry and environmental regulations
When Will API SQ / GF-7 Oils Be Available?
The first licensing date for API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 oils is March 31, 2025. While the current standard will eventually be phased out of distribution, API SQ/ILSAC GF-7 oils will be fully backward compatible with API SQ/ILSAC GF-6 of the same viscosity grade.

What Does This Mean for Automotive Professionals?
The new standards have several implications for automotive repair shops, oil change centers and dealerships. Our partner, Mighty Auto Parts, put together a list of things that can help your service center, dealership or shop handle this change:
- Inventory Planning: Start planning now to stock compliant oils, which include different viscosity grades like 0W-16 and lower viscosity grades.
- Technician Training: Ensure your team is well-versed in the new specifications and the benefits they offer. This knowledge is crucial for providing accurate service and advice to customers.
- Update Service Recommendations: Update your service guides and recommendations to reflect the correct oil for each vehicle, particularly newer models. Accuracy is paramount for maintaining warranties and ensuring optimal performance.
- Customer Communication: Proactively educate your customers about the new API SQ/ILSAC GF-7 standards. Explain the benefits of these new oils and why they are necessary for modern vehicles. This will build trust and demonstrate your expertise.
